Understanding Pressure Ulcers<\/h2>

Pressure ulcers have several names, such as bedsores, pressure sores, and decubitus, but regardless of what we call the phenomenon, the problem is the same: When an area of skin has been subjected to prolonged pressure or friction for an extended period, it results in a lack of oxygen in the tissue, and pressure ulcers develop. It is often seen over bony prominences such as the sacrum, ischial tuberosity, greater trochanter, lateral malleoli, and heels. The underlying subcutaneous fat tissue and muscles are more sensitive to pressure than the overlying skin. Therefore, tissue necrosis develops in depth first, before the skin shows redness and ruptures.<\/p>

How do pressure ulcers develop?<\/h3>

The development of pressure ulcers depends partly on the pressure applied, partly on the duration the tissue has been exposed to pressure, and partly on the location of the pressure and the patient's general health. Causes of pressure ulcers can be divided into internal and external factors. Most factors that are related to the individual are the internal factors. The external factors are related to the external environment and include pressure, shear (traction), and friction. A common risk factor for pressure ulcers is immobility.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Different types of mattresses for individual challenges<\/h3>

Sometimes, pressure ulcers develop due to equipment used by the patient, such as CPAP masks, oxygen catheters, or drains. A COPD patient sitting with their elbows pressed hard on the table to breathe can also develop pressure ulcers due to the static pressure between the elbow and the tabletop.
