What can I do during a power outage

What happens to my mattress?

What happens to my mattress with a pump if there is a power outage? We have gathered information here on what you should be aware of when you have a mattress with a pump during a power outage or power failure.

There are three product groups that will be affected when the power is turned off.

Alternating pressure mattress / full mattress

This product group is clearly the most vulnerable, as the person ends up on the bed slats if the power failure lasts too long.

A new mattress from us, with a user weighing 100 kg lying flat, will hold air for at least 12 hours. However, there are factors that can reduce this time factor. These can be:

  • the age of the mattress
  • the person's weight
  • smoking in or around the mattress

Therefore, it would be a good idea to eliminate as many of these factors as possible before turning off the power. Please get in touch with your local consultant for further guidance on this – it might be time to replace the mattress.

Remember that the mattress in this product group will lose air over time, and the user will end up on the bed slats if you do not move the user in time, for example, to a pressure ulcer-preventing foam mattress, such as Zibo Mono Plus.

Mattress toppers

This product group is not as exposed as full mattresses. However, they do not hold air as long, but in the event of a prolonged power outage, the user will not end up on the bed slats, but on the mandatory safety mattress. Always check that the safety mattress is in good condition.

A new mattress topper from us, with a user weighing 100 kg in a flat position, will hold air for at least 8 hours. The above factors also apply to this product group regarding the ability to hold air over time.

Combination / hybrid mattresses

This product group poses no risk, as it can function both with and without a pump. If the pump is connected and there is a power outage, the mattress will function as a pressure-relieving mattress without the risk of the user sinking through it.

Pump alarm during power failure

It is important to note that all pumps are equipped with an alarm that will be triggered in the event of a power failure. This will not stop until it is deactivated by the user or care staff. It should also be noted that the mattresses do not provide pressure relief during a power failure, so the requirement to turn and reposition will be even more relevant during the power outage.

More information about power failure

You can get more general information about power outages from your local electricity company, or you can read more in the Emergency Management Agency's brochure “Prepared for Crises”.
